Cannot install required update for Vista Ultimate - Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft .NET Framework Family Update KB951847 x 86
My automated windows update cannot download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft .NET Framework Family Update KB951847 x 86.
I have tried several fizes as suggested but they do not seem to work.
BTW I am using Vista Ultimate.
I tried downloaded the three seperate upgrades and was told none of the three applied to my system.

Thanks for using the Answers Forum.
I would check to make sure your getting the 32-bit update if your using the 32-bit version of Windows, or 64-bit update for the 64-bit Windows.

To successfully install the update, uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework on the computer, and then reinstall all the versions of the .NET Framework on the computer.

Method 1: Manually remove and reinstall .NET Framework To manually remove and reinstall the .NET Framework, follow these steps:
Remove the .NET Framework.
Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
Double-click Add or Remove Programs .
Note each version of the .NET Framework that is already installed on the computer.
Then, uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework.
When you are prompted, restart the computer.
Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clean up the MSI database state for all the versions of the .NET Framework.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

Method 2: Use the .NET Framework automatic cleanup tool This tool is not intended as a substitute for the standard uninstall procedure.
You should try to perform an uninstall by using the steps in Method 1, earlier in this article, before you use this cleanup
tool.

Note This cleanup tool deletes shared files and registry keys that are used by multiple versions of the .NET Framework.
To guarantee that all versions of the .NET Framework work correctly, if you run the cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework, you
must first remove all installed versions of the .NET Framework by using this cleanup tool.
Then, you must reinstall all the previously installed versions starting with the lowest version number.
Suppose that you have the .NET Framework 1.1 and the .NET Framework 2.0 installed on your computer, and you plan to use this cleanup tool.
In this scenario, you should use the cleanup tool to first remove the .NET Framework 1.1, and then use the cleanup tool
to remove the .NET Framework 2.0.
After you have removed both versions, you would then reinstall .NET Framework 1.1, and then install the .NET Framework 2.0, in that sequence.

Manually editing the Windows registry to fix Error Cannot install required update for Vista Ultimate - Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft .NET Framework Family Update KB951847 x 86
Caution: Unless you an advanced computer user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
- Click the Start button.
- Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
- While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
- You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
- Click Yes.
- A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
- Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
- In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
- From the File menu, choose Export.
- In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
- In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
- In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
- Click Save.
- The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
- You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
