After computer is idle for a few hours no programs will open in Windows
original title: PROGRAMS WONT OPEN AFTER COMPUTER LEFT IDLE....PLEASE HELP
Hi,
i have been experiencing a very frustrating problem, if i leave my comp idle for a few hours i find that none of my programs start, and sometimes i cannot even open olders on my desktop, double clicking any shortcut or even the .exe in the root program folder
results in nothing happening.
the start menu still opens but i cant select restart or log off as they do not appear, i can still shutdown but it takes about 30 seconds before acually responding and shutting down.
Also should mention that if i open any program eg: photoshop or nero and leave the computer idle, when i return and try to continue using the program it will stop responding most of the time, any either ctrl-alt-delete or shutdown is required to quit.
my power management setting are all off, hybrid sleep is off....my comp is set to never sleep in any way.
i am running windows 7 pro x64, i3 processor, 4gb ram
please help, i have been pulling my hair out for a couple of months with this.

Download SmartPCFixer to Fix It (Free)
Hello Jamieh2k7,
This could be caused if the Explorer is crashing when you leave your computer idle.
I suggest that you set your computer to clean boot and check if you have the same issue.
a. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
b. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
c. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
d. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
e. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
f. Click OK.
g. When you are prompted, click Restart.
After the computer starts, check if the issue is fixed, then follow the steps mentioned in the following KB article to narrow down the exact source:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
You can also set the computer to normal startup once you determine the service causing the issue.
See the section on how return your computer to a Normal startup mode by following the steps under “Reset the computer to start as usual” in the above
article.
Also check event viewer to see if there are any logs related to the Explorer crashing.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Open-Event-Viewer
You can refer the below link that will help you analyze the event viewer entries:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-information-appears-in-event-logs-Event-Viewer
You can alternatively post the entries in your answer if you have any difficulty in finding the errors.
Thanks,
Irfan H, Microsoft Answers Support Engineer.
In this method we will try to Boot in Safe mode with Networking and see if the error still persists.
- Search "MSCONFIG" and Open.
- Click on Boot Tab
- Tick Safe Boot in Boot Option
- Select Network.
- Click Apply and OK.
- Reboot your System.
