Troubleshoot:backup does not start 2 Error

backup does not start 2

Posting this again as the previous tech seems to have gone into hibernation.
Windows backup will not initialize when you click the icon - zero response.
It seems to have been disabled.
I've had Shadow Copy cloner installed at some point but it has been
uninstalled.
See previous communication below to avoid suggesting the same solutions again:

Backup doesn't start anymore.
I run win7 x64 pro.
I've done one system disk backup using windows own backup utility.
Now when I want to perform another one, the backup utility in the control panel won't start at all.
Nothing happens when I double click the icon.

Some programs were installed since the last successful backup.
There was also one incident where an automatic update froze, possible due to the use of a KVM switch in the middle of the update process.
But after a forced restart everything seemed ok.
And
further updates have been made since.

I've performed a systems check that reported nothing wrong.
I've tried initializing the backup after a clean boot where all non-windows services and applications were disabled.
Still the backup will not start.
Advice urgently needed.
Thank you.

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community and we will be glad to assist you with your concern.

Based on the description provided, it looks like you are facing an issue while performing Windows backup.

It would be great if you can reply to this question in order to assist you further.

Have you installed any backup and restore application on your computer?

This issue might occur due to Windows Backup services are not started.

Check the following services are enabled and started.

Volume Shadow Copy

a.     Click Start, in the start search box, type Services and press Enter.
b.     Scroll down and find the Volume Shadow Copy.  Double-click “Volume Shadow Copy” in the Services list.
c.     On the General tab, make sure the service is started under “Service status”.
d.     If the service is not already running, under Service status, click Start, and then click OK.

I would suggest you to disable all the security software including Windows Firewall, and then check if it helps.

Refer to the following Microsoft article:

Disable antivirus software:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

Turn Windows Firewall on or off: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats.
In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software.
If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon
as you're done.
If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

For any help related to Windows you may always post on the Microsoft Community Forums and we will be glad to help.

Followed all the above steps.
Required services were started.
Firewall and anti-virus software were disabled.
Still the backup will not come to life when clicking the icon.

And to further answer the question about backup and restore application.
Yes, at some point I seem to have installed Shadow Copy Cloner.
But I never used it.
Should I uninstall this program?

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for reverting back and letting us know the status of the issue.

Yes, I would suggest you to uninstall Shadow Copy Cloner program and perform a clean boot and check if it helps.

Clean boot will check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

How to troubleshoot problems using clean boot in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot “to reset
computer as usual.

If you have any more suggestions/queries related to Windows feel free to post and we will be happy to help you.

Sorry for the delayed response.

I uninstalled the Shadow Copy Cloner program and did a clean boot.
No change.
Windows Backup will not start.
A thing of note however.
I seem unable to deselect "load startup items" in the msconfig general panel.
Looks like this might have something to
do with my antivirus Nod 32 not allowing itself being disabled.
But this is the only non-windows service being initiated at startup.
And I know for a fact that I've performed at least one successful backup with nod32 running in the background so I'm not worried
about that.

I've read somewhere that similar problems like mine have been traced back to a corrupted registry, or a registry file that has been permanently modified by another backup software.
Do you have comment on that or do you have any other suggestion that might
lead forward at this point?

Is there a diagnostics tool I could use to indicate what the problem might be? Or is there a separate installer available for Windows Backup, so that I can re-install it and bring it back online again?
