Any print freezes but intermittently. At same time paste also causes freeze.

At random, but most often after initial startup of the day, my computer exhibits the following symptoms:
If I attempt to print to any printer, the program initiating the print freezes e.g.
Word, Adobe Reader, IE, etc.
This happens no matter what printer being used.
Print spooler is running.At the same time, if I attempt to do a copy and paste e.g.
from IE to Word, the program I am attempting to paste into also freezes.Another apparently related symptom is that when I attempt to open various (not all, but random) Excel files, the open freezes on 0%.
After I have re-booted, sometimes only once other times several attempts, the problem simply disappears.
i.e.
all of the 3 problems above just go away until the next time (usually a day or so later).
I'm not certain, but I think the problem is less common if I let the PC alone for several minutes before using it.
Any advice from those experiencing similar symptoms would be appreciated.

PS I am running Windows 7 Professional SP1
PPS I have run a reinstall/repair of Windows

1)      Have you made any changes prior to the issue?
2)      What is the make and model number of the printer?
a.       Try copy and paste when the computer is in a clean boot.
b.      Try to open files when the computer is in a clean boot.

1. Go to Start button.
2. Open Control Panel.
3. Go to Windows Error Reporting.
4. Click on System and Maintenance, then click Problem Reports and Solutions.
5. Next, click Change Settings located on the left side panel of the Problem Reports and Solutions window.
6. Select an option to configure how you want Windows to look for a solution to your problems. You may allow Windows to do it automatically or ask you every time to check if problem occurs.
7. Next, click the Advanced settings link.
8. Select Off to turn off Error Reporting.
